ESHE 410: Advanced Strength and Conditioning

This course provides the students with a deeper understanding of current issues and practices in strength and conditioning. The student will learn proper coaching and analysis for developing the key components of athletic performance. Students will investigate, debate, and research key training issues. The final product is the development of research presentation on current practices in the field. Students gather critical skills that can be used in the academy or workplace to create, analyze, and teach strength and conditioning programming.
Detailed Description of Course
This course covers the following topics:
- Olympic Weightlifting technique, teaching progression, and performance analysis.
- Speed development technique, teaching progression, and performance analysis.
- Running technique and the impact of various training modalities.
- Evaluating research in the field of strength and conditioning.
- Preparing literature reviews in the field of strength and conditioning.
- Preparing and submitting application for Institutional Review Board Approval.
- Collecting and evaluating data on selected topics in the field of strength and conditioning.
- Writing research papers in the field ofs trength and conditioning.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Course instruction strategies will include lecture, performance analysis, research,
peer instruction, and oral and written communication activities.
Student Goals and Objectives of the Course
Having successfully completed this course, students will be able to:
- Evaluate Olympic Weightlifting technique, teaching progression, and performance
analysis.
- Evaluate speed development technique, teaching progression, and performance analysis.
- Evaluate research articles in exercise science and/or strength and conditioning
journals.
- Write and submit an Institutional Review Board application.
- Collect and analyze data for strength and conditioning research studies.
- Write basic scientific articles.
- Present research orally and in writing at research and or communit events.
Assessment Measures
Student learning may be assessed through written exams, papers, presentations, technique
evaluations, and/or portfolio projects.
