ESHE 453: Student Teaching in Physical Education: Grades K-12

Prerequisite: Meet eligibility for student teaching

Provides clinical experiences in at least two settings: one in an elementary school and one in a middle or high school. Begins with observation and limited participation and culminates in assumption of full responsibility in the classroom. Special seminars are regularly scheduled to enhance professional development of students.

Detailed Description of Content of Course

A clinical experience on two levels in grades K-12; begins with observation and limited participation and culminates in assumption of full responsibility in the classroom. Special seminars are regularly schedule to enhance the professional development of students enrolled in the student teaching program. The course provides a period of experience in professional and clinical practices in grades NK—12 during which the student tests and reconstructs the theory which she/he has evolved and during which she/he further develops a personal teaching style.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Student teacher placements are made in physical and health education as appropriate to the certification sought. Opportunities are provided to practice under the supervision of approved cooperating teachers and university supervisors. The experience begins with observation and limited participation and culminates in assumption of full teaching responsibility.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the completion of this course. students will be able

 

1. Demonstrate content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and theoretical knowledge in the design, development, and implementation of instruction.
2. Make the transition from student to practicing professional.
3. Put into practice in a clinical setting the code of professional conduct and ethical standards that characterize the teaching profession.
4. Increase the understanding and perspective of the education process in grades NK-12 through full-time teaching supported by guided supervision from school and university personnel.

 

Assessment Measures

1. Assessment in student teaching is both formative and summative and involves the collective evaluations of classroom teachers, school administrators, and university faculty. Formative evaluation is based upon the competencies articulated in the INTASC standards. The exit criteria forms the basis for summative evaluation procedures.

Other Course Information

Course Outline :

  • Week 1 & 2 Observation and discussion of planning and implementation of instruction, classroom. Classroom management techniques and the administrative duties of the cooperating teacher will also be discussed. Assist individual students and conduct routine teaching activities. Holds regularly scheduled conferences with cooperating teacher and the university supervisor.
  • Week 3 & 4 Observations and increased participation in non-instructional activities and assumes responsibility for planning and teaching of one or more classes within the subject area. Confers with the cooperating teacher and university supervisor.
  • Week 5 & 6 Continued involvement in management and administrative duties. Increase teaching load. Continue to meet regularly with cooperating teacher and university supervisor for assistance.
  • Week 7 & 8 Assume full responsibility in all areas.

Continue to confer regularly with cooperating teacher and university supervisor for assistance and feedback.

REPEAT THE ABOVE AT A SECOND ASSIGNED SCHOOL.
