DSNF 105: Introductory Studio

Prerequisites: Grade of “C” or better in DSN 100 and DSN 110

Credit Hours: (3) Six hours studio


An introduction to apparel design fundamentals and problem solving techniques to two- and three-dimensional design problems for the fashion design environments. Emphasis is on the design process, including conceptual thinking and creative expression.


Detailed Description of Course

This course introduces students to basic idea visualization techniques for shaping substrates, and develops skills in visualization of three-dimensional structures. The student develops an awareness of the application of abstract design principles in creating aesthetically appropriate and functional design solutions. They are guided through the design process in order to develop solutions that apply to an identified problem. Topics include the building blocks of apparel, shaping three-dimensional forms, design process documentation, substrate texture and pattern considerations, and basic construction techniques.


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Studio will reinforce and supplement the assigned readings and provide explanation, hands-on demonstration, and instruction on topics listed. Studio sessions will also provide the student an opportunity to explore and develop solutions to assigned problems, receive feed-back on their process and solutions, and to develop critical thinking skills. Alternative solutions are generated through creativity and ideation exercises; spatial composition is evaluated and refined through sketching exercises and study model building.

Upon successful completion of this course the student will demonstrate awareness of:
1. Garment style variations
2. Sewn product reverse engineering as a means of product development and analysis
3. Translation of two-dimensional representation into three-dimensional form
    a. aesthetic and functional considerations
    b. mock-up/prototype/model building and assessment
    c. materials function and selection
4. An awareness of three-dimensional form into two-dimensional representation
5. An awareness of the human body in space and form
6. Aesthetic evaluation based on principles of design as related to target market
7. Style terminology
8. Presentation board functional and aesthetic drivers
9. Critical listening skills application to design process – assignment instructions, feedback, and critique
10. Pathways to design revision based on critique and constructive criticism
Knowledge of:
11. Elements and principles of design in application, with emphasis on shape/form, color, scale, and proportion
12. Design process and its documentation
    a. Analytical thinking aspects including problem identification, information gathering, critical and strategic analysis and problem solving
    b. Conceptual thinking aspect including ideation, creativity, visual and volumetric imagination and concept development.


Assessment Measures

Reading and related information will be assessed by classroom exercises.  Assignments will include exercises, projects and presentations. Written and oral critiques, design process records, sample book, and craftsmanship of the aforementioned items are included as an integral part of the evaluation criteria for all projects.
