DSNF 307: Integrated Apparel Design
Prerequisites: DSN 340, DSNF 300, DSNF 320, DSNF 350; 2.5 in-major GPA
Credit Hours: (3) Six hours studio
The purpose of this course is to integrate various 2-D and 3-D design processes to create presentation boards and muslin mock-ups to address intermediate-level aesthetic and technical problems of apparel design realization.
Detailed Description of Course
The student will explore 2-D and 3-D processes of pattern development and manipulation, 2-D and 3-D techniques for board presentations, sizing and fit problems related to specific styles and fabric types.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Demonstration functional/aesthetic requirements and technical concerns for target markets and juried competition are applied to integrative garment design processes. In studio exercises and projects enhance conceptual thinking, creativity, and technique; and to support problem solving, discovery, and invention.
Student Goals and Objectives of the Course
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to demonstrate:
Awareness of:
1. Pattern grading and marker making.
Knowledge of:
1. Critical thinking from the two-dimensional to three-dimensional form.
2. Body interaction with garment structure, function, and aesthetics (including Garment fit; fitting devices use and evaluation).
3. Apparel line development to address specific aesthetic and functional goals.
Understanding of:
4. Garment style identification and communication.
5. Patternmaking techniques and quality standards.
6. Apparel pre-preproduction and production processes, documentation, and implementation.
7. Fabric, findings and trims selection to realize design vision.
8. Apparel standards and specification development and implementation.
9. Design process documentation, justification, and implementation, including design revision based on critique, constructive criticism, and self-reflection.
10. Effective time and project management.
Comprehension of:
11. Presentation format functional and aesthetic drivers as seen in a successful application.
12. Use of color in fashion applications.
Assessment Measures
Quizzes based on readings, lectures, and class exercises will assess students’ knowledge of course content. Studio assignments will include critiques, exercises, projects and digital presentations. Application of software media for successful completion of project objectives and documentation are an integral part of the evaluation criteria for all projects.
