Health 412: Driver Education - Driver Task Analysis

Pre- or Corequisite: HLTH 410 and current Virginia driver’s license A

Credit Hours: (3) One hour lecture; four hours laboratory

Critical analysis of highway transportation systems; the driving task; traffic problems; factors contributing to performance of highway user and knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for competence of traffic citizens.  Develops traffic citizen competencies and introduces methods and materials to develop those competencies in others.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

The course is designed to give students the opportunity to learn and perfect skills and knowledge involved in teaching others how to safely operate a motor vehicle.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students will be involved in designing lesson plans and the implementation of lessons. They will spend a minimum of ten hours in observation and analysis of teaching and a minimum of ten hours in instruction of driving skills.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Upon successful completion of the course the students shall be able to:

 

1. Perform pre-driving, behind-the-wheel and post-driving checks on the vehicle.
2. Identify and explain the proper procedure to follow for straight-line driving and for right/left turns.
3. Make appropriate time-space gap assessments and smooth skillful operation of driving controls during the execution of basic traffic maneuvers.
4. Demonstrate scanning techniques and assessment procedures necessary to initiate and complete various parking maneuvers.
5. Identify critical cues and execute actions necessary to maintain control of time and space when confronted with situations where multiple hazards represent potential conflict..
6. Identify and execute actions necessary for responding to emergency situations requiring evasive maneuvers.
7. Demonstrate general, perceptual, and decision-making skills needed to drive successfully in city/expressway situations.
8. Identify and evaluate strategies for responding to emergency situations.
9. Demonstrate the ability to coordinate the use of the accelerator, clutch pedal, brakes and control steering while shifting from one gear to another to maintain speed appropriate to the efficient movement of traffic.
10. Demonstrate actual instructional planning and teaching driving skills.
11. Demonstrate knowledge of assessing the student driver.
12. Demonstrate knowledge of assessing the skills, knowledge and technique of the student instruction.

 

Assessment Measures

Evaluation techniques shall include lesson plans, task analysis reports, assessments of the student teacher, a final evaluation of student driving performance and an assessment of the student instructor in an in-car driving lesson.
