Prerequisite: ITEC 109 or ITEC 120 with a grade of “C” or better
Credit Hours: (1)
Instruction in the technology of digital imaging, photo manipulation, and optimization. Practice in the creation, editing and processing of digital images for use in various media with an emphasis on the World Wide Web. Also, attention will be given to aesthetics layout.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
1. Identification of the various image formats currently used in digital media and the World Wide Web.
2. Image manipulation: cropping, straightening, and resizing digital images (downrezing and interpolation).
3. Working with multiple layer image compositions.
4. Painting, editing, and restoring digital images.
5. Embedding and manipulating images within HTML. Also tagging digital images for search engine optimization.
6. Working with image transparency and opacity.
7. Working interactive image effects and formats.
8. Incorporating good aesthetics, layout, and design principles.
9. Image optimization: file size calculation, page load, bandwidth limitations, and image quality in relation to display on different mediums.
10. File structure, data transfer, and file transfer protocol (FTP) associated with digital images.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Program examples for some problems will be introduced via asynchronous online instructional step-by-step tutorials. Students will then be required to finish some projects for problems similar to those discussed in the online tutorials.
Students will progressively learn the necessary tools, techniques, and processes necessary for the manipulation and optimization of digital images from interactive online asynchronous tutorials with step-by-step instructions.
Student Goals and Objectives of the Course
Students who complete the course will be able to:
1. Identify digital image formats.
2. Demonstrate a working knowledge and examples of the various digital image formats.
3. Identify the tools, techniques, and processes required to optimize digital images.
4. Demonstrate digital image optimization for different mediums including the World Wide Web.
5. Demonstrate utilization of the tools, techniques, and processes associated digital image manipulation.
6. Demonstrate how to tag digital images for search engine optimization.
7. Demonstrate sound aesthetics and design theory.
Assessment Measures
Students will be evaluated based on several major digital imaging assignments and examinations.
