ITEC 410

ITEC 410: Modeling and Simulation

Prerequisites: ITEC 320 and STAT 301

Credit Hours: (3)

An introduction to mathematical modeling and the simulation of models using high-level programming languages.

Detailed Description of Content of Course
Topics include:
1. Describing a system – taxonomy
2. Model development and validation
3. Basic probability theory
4. Simulation using Monte Carlo techniques
5. Discrete event simulation
6. Analysis of simulation inputs
7. Analysis of simulations outputs
8. Variance reduction techniques
9. Simulation software
10. Simulation validation and verification

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

By developing several simulation projects, students will see how models and computer program implementations of those models are developed, validated and verified. Each project will focus on a different way in which a model and/or its implementation as a computer program can be accomplished. These projects may be completed either individually or in groups.

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Students who complete the course will be able to:
1. Demonstrate how to use a simulation language.
2. Describe mathematical modeling.
3. Demonstrate a stochastic simulation.
4. Describe model validation

Assessment Measures
Several projects in addition to at least one in-class exam and the final exam will serve to evaluate the students.
