ITEC 623: MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Development and application of management information systems to organizations. Analysis of critical information flow in the context of an organizational system.
Detailed Description of Content of the Course
A management-oriented introduction to the use of information technologies in improving the effectiveness of organizations.
The following topics will be covered:
Information systems as a strategic resource
Managing the data resource
Developing information systems
Integrated computer systems: distributed systems,telecommunications, and networking
End-user computing
Detailed Description of the Conduct of the Course
The course is delivered with a combination of lecture and discussion. Formal class presentations may be augmented with
videotapes and demonstrations of computer applications. Student projects including case analyses and term papers may be assigned.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
Each student will:
1. Describe the history and probable future course of the business information systems field as strategic applications increase in importance.
2. Identify the interactions among information system components which are necessary if successful systems are to be implemented.
3. Describe the principles of analyzing, designing and implementing computer-based information systems.
4. Identify and describe various types of information systems and the role they play in modern organizations.
5. Describe the role of various underlying foundations of information systems such as systems theory, management
concepts, hardware and software, data management, and decision-making.
Assessment Measures
Assessment of the student's success will be based on the instructor's selected combination of examinations, homework
projects, term papers, and class participation.
