MKTG 440: Supply Chain Management

The study of inventory, transportation and traffic management, storage and other logistics functions as an integrated system within the firm and throughout the firm’s supplier and customer channels. Uses problem- solving case studies with computer assisted decision making.

Detailed Description of Content of the Course

This course is comprised of the study of the objectives, processes, and functions of logistics and supply chain management activities including sourcing, manufacturing, transportation, inventory management, materials handling, supply chain performance measurement, and global logistics and supply chain strategies. Topics covered in this course include:

• Overview of logistics and supply chain management
• Customer service
• Strategic sourcing
• Inventory management
• Warehousing, materials handling and packaging
• Logistics and supply chain information technology
• Transportation infrastructure and operations
• Global strategies for logistics and supply chain management
• Operational, financial and social performance for logistics/supply chain management


Detailed Description of Conduct of the Course

The course is conducted using lectures from text material and current literature in logistics and supply chain management. Students are expected to complete a series of increasingly complex individual case studies that incorporate text and lecture material. In addition to the text, students are assigned one or more lengthy reading assignments that integrate the course material into practical applications. Students are required to engage in discussions and answer questions on these reading assignments. Finally, students may hear from a variety of guest speakers in order to acquaint them with current logistics/supply chain management practices.


Goals and Objectives of the Course

Upon successful completion of the course, students will:

• Describe the tools and language of logistics and supply chain management
• Recognize current issues in logistics and supply chain management
• Recognize the importance of logistics and supply chain management as a professional career choice
• Appraise the role of logistics and supply chain management in the formulation of organizational strategy.
• Analyze and solve logistics/supply chain management problems
• Recognize the role and importance of logistics and supply chain management in the domestic and international economies


Assessment Measures

Assessment of the student's success in the course is based on grades in individual case analyses, as well as daily quizzes on assigned text materials, and periodic quizzes and class discussions on additional assigned reading material.
