MATH 285: Topics in Mathematics

Prerequisites: Instructor permission

Credit Hours: (1-6)

Special topics in mathematics that are accessible to non-mathematics majors, as student and faculty interest demands. Syllabus is available each time the class is offered. Interested students should contact the department chairperson or the course instructor before registering. May be taken more than once for credit with a different topic.


Detailed Description of Course

Topics in mathematics that are accessible to non-mathematics majors to be covered are decided by the instructor and department chairperson. Content will depend on student and faculty interest. Course outlines will be approved by departmental Curriculum Committee and chair before the course is offered.


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Conduct of the course will likely be a function of enrollment. Interested students should discuss the conduct of the course with the chairperson and the instructor prior to registration. Most instructors will present lectures and will expect students to work on assignments and/or projects. Student presentation may be required. Students may be required to work in small groups.


Student Goals and Objectives of the Course

1) To provide students the opportunity to develop mathematical knowledge and skills in, areas of mathematics not addressedby other lower-level departmental courses.
    OR
2) To offer students the opportunity to engage in undergraduate research projects/experiences that amy extend to interdisciplinary teams and opportunities (e.g. Study Abroad).


Assessment Measures

Graded tasks may include tests, quizzes, homework exercises, projects, class participation, group work, and attendance.


Other Course Information

This course is primarily intended for freshman and sophomore mathematics majors or for non-mathematics majors.
