MATH 681: Advance Topics in Mathematics

Prerequisite: Undergraduate degree in mathematics or Permission of instructor

Note(s): May be taken for credit more than once, providing the topics are different each time.

This course will cover selected advanced topics in mathematics. An outline of topics will be made available each time the course is offered as part of the course syllabus. This course may be taken again for credit with a different topic. There will be a minimum of 45 contact hours per course.


Official Course Description Content

As this is an advanced topics course, the content will be dependent upon the topic. The syllabus for the given topic will cover all necessary content related to the advanced topic in mathematics. An example of such content may be Advanced Real Analysis, Mathematics of Data Science, Mathematical Modeling and Simulation, Financial Modeling and Applications, Partial Differential Equations.


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The course is intended to provide an opportunity for members of the extended community who currently hold at least a bachelor's degree in mathematics or a closely related field to engage in advanced study of a particular pure or applied mathematics topics. These may include, but are not limited to Real Analysis, Mathematics of Data Science, Mathematical Modeling and Simulation, Financial Modeling and Applications, and Partial Differential Equations.


Student Learning Outcomes

The specific goals and objectives of the course will depend on the specific topic or topics covered. In general, a student successfully completing the course will have a thorough understanding of one or more advanced topic in mathematics (which may include pure or applied mathematics topics), will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the topic(s), and will be able to present the topic(s) accurately to an audience.


Assessment Measures

Assessment measures will depend on the topic and the instructor. These may include examinations, written papers, oral presentations, class participation, or other commonly employed assessments.


Other Course Information

This course will primarily be offered to students with a bachelor's degree in mathematics, are completing the M.S. of Education - Mathematics Education, and/or are completing the Mathematics Education Certificate.
