MSCI 498: Independent Study
Prerequisites: MSCI 212 and approval from the senior Miiltary Science Instructor (RU Army ROTC OIC).

In this course the student will evaluate one or more areas of applied military leadership. Specific topics may include the theory and application of mission command, the theory and application of the Army Leadership Requirements Model, or another topic approved by the instructor.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
Requires one or more in-depth individual research assignments culminating with a presentation of findings at the end of the semester to the senior Military Science Instructor (RU Army ROTC OIC). All course material will be researched and presented in accordance with Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of the Army (DA) regulatory guidance.
In accordance with research objectives, a strategy, and a timeline agreed upon by the student and the instructor during the first class meeting and according to all applicable regulations, the student will be assigned research topics in one or more of the following military subfields: strategy, planning, logistics, maintenance, and/or history.
Students will conduct physical training two to five times per week to maintain fitness level for commissioning and are required to pass the Army Physical Fitness Test and Army Height/Weight standards to maintain Army ROTC benefits.
Students may be required to serve as senior mentors and advisors to Military Science Level III and Military Science Level IV Cadets during leadership labs, training meetings, and physical training to develop their leadership attributes and competencies while developing the Student's ability to assess attributes and competencies under the Army Leadership Requirements Model.
Notes: The grade option for this course will be in accordance with the standard RU A-F grading scale. Contracted and scholarship Cadets are required to participate in an ROTC course every semester to maintain their Army ROTC benefits. Two semesters of MSCI 498 may be authorized with the approval of the Senior Military Science Instructor to meet this requirement.

Written and orally presented research presentations, physical training, leadership labs, field training exercise.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
Evaluate one or more of the major areas of applied military leadership.
Assessment Measures
Students will be required to report their progress to the senior military instructor at no less than 3 week intervals at which time they will receive guidance for future research. Students will be assessed on their physical fitness. Students will be assessed on their leadership ability by demonstrating the leadership attributes and competencies in the Army Leadership Requirements Model.
The grading scale is listed below:
Research Project: 70%
Army Physical Fitness Test: 20%
Demonstrated Army Leadership Requirements Model: 10%
Other Course Information
Leadership Lab Focus. MSCI 498 students serve as senior mentors to Military Science Level III and Military Science Level IV Cadets. Students develop their skills at counseling and developing junior leaders by analyzing their leadership attributes and competencies and providing constructive feedback about their performance leading small units in hands-on tactical training.
