MUSC121. The Art of Music (GE)
Three hours lecture (3).

Introduction to elements of music. Study of important forms, styles and media of Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th century music.

Note(s): General Education and Humanistic or Artistic Expression designated course. For non-music majors.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

Study of musical instruments and an introduction to the elements of music and the performance of music. Study of music from all periods of European Art music from Medieval through 20th Century. Study of American music, including Jazz, folk and popular music. Study of music of other cultures. Listening appropriate to the above.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students will read about music and listen to music from various periods. They will watch both video tapes of musical performances, opera and ballet, plus video disk performances, historical perspective presentations, and examples from slide banks. Opportunities for discussing music both from the analytical point of view and the personal impression aspect will be provided in the classroom. Students will attend live performances both on and off campus and will write about those performances. Occasional presentations of live music will be presented in class and demonstrations of various instruments.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of the course, the student will have knowledge of the history and elements of music and will have developed the ability to listen to recorded and live music both from analytical and aesthetic viewpoints.

 

Assessment Measures

Grades will be based on written and listening tests, papers discussing live performance experiences, and the final exam.
