MUSC 158: Guitar I for Musitc Therapy Students

Prerequisites: Music Therapy Major or permission of instructor.

Credit Hours: (1)

Beginning through intermediate guitar techniques intended for students in the music therapy program.

 

Detailed Description of Course Content

  • Introduction to parts of the guitar, tuning, replacing strings, guitar care and maintenance
  • Health and safety of the musician in relation to playing the guitar
  • Functional understanding of the fretboard, string names and placement, how to play basic melodies as found in traditional, folk, and/or popular songs
  • Beginning finger picking and strumming patterns
  • Basic chord positions in major and minor keys
  • Introduction to simple chord extensions
  • How to read traditional notation and chord symbols as found on a lead sheet or in a fakebook
  • Transposition
  • An introduction to barre chords both major and minor forms.

 


 Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This lab course may include the following instructional strategies: lecture, cooperative/group learning, demonstrations, music playing opportunities and playing/performing exams. 


 

Goals and Objectives of the Course


The following professional competencies as outlined by the American Music Therapy Association will be addressed in this course.

Introduced:

  • Basic foundations of guitar
  • How to play basic chord progression in several major and minor keys with varied accompaniment patterns and simple chord extensions
  • Play a basic repertoire of traditional, folk, and popular songs with and without printed music
  • Harmonize and transpose simple compositions in several keys
  • Tunes the guitar using standard tunings


 
Assessment Measures

Playing exams, functional assessment of skills during class .
