MUSC 373 Digital Music Composition (1-2)
Two hours (1) or four hours laboratory (1-2).

Prerequisites: MUSC 127 and MUSC 212

Original compositions using electronic sound sources are prepared for performance in a concert setting or as a vital component in an audio-visual presentation. Existing works composed for electronic sound sources are surveyed. May be taken again for credit.

Emphasis on the composition of music using electronic sound sources. Musical compositions may be realized for use in a concert setting or as a vital component in an audio-visual presentation. Includes a survey of existing works composed for electronic sound sources. May be taken again for credit.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students will discuss existing electronic musical compositions in terms of musical structure, sonic materials, and historical context. Students will also present their own musical compositions in class.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Students should develop the ability and desire to discuss existing musical works in an appropriate historical context using appropriate musical terms to describe content, structure and technical materials. Students should also be able to construct meaningful musical compositions written specifically for electronic sound sources. Students should be able to select, adapt and construct sound sources appropriate for varied musical contexts using an electronic control mechanism and one or more tone generators.

 

Assessment Measures

Students will be assessed on their ability to discuss existing musical works in writing and to compose music for performance in a concert setting or as part of an audio-visual presentation.
