MUSC 420: Methods and Materials in Music Therapy
Prerequisites: MUSC 112 and upper-level standing as a music therapy major
Credit Hours: (3)
Investigates existing methods and resource materials in music therapy and covers practices
and techniques of the 4 music therapy methods, recreative, composition, improvisation,
and receptive methods and their application to a wide variety of disability areas.
Detailed Description of Course Content
• Survey and evaluation of published printed materials in music therapy
• Survey and evaluation of the 4 main methods of music therapy
• Composition and application of original activities and techniques in music therapy
• Composition of appropriate music and lyrics
• Performance of activities and techniques in class
• Creation of therapeutic goals and objectives to address a wide variety of clinical
needs
• Self-evaluation of growth and development across the entire semester through reflective
journaling and in-class discussions
Detailed Description of Conduct of the Course
An informal approach to lecture and experiential will be emphasized.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
At the conclusion of the course, the student will:
• Demonstrate knowledge of clinical musical therapy best practices, methods, and materials.
• Be able to prepare and implement music therapy sessions in a creative manner.
• Identify areas overlapping in music therapy and related disciplines.
Assessment Measures
Students will prepare and present planned activities in music therapy, they will present current music therapy research on each of the four music therapy methods, they will connect research to session planning in a final clinical paper, and they will demonstrate functional musicianship on piano, voice, percussion, and guitar.
