Prerequisites MUSC 477,485 and 486

Investigation into advanced methods and materials in music therapy. Emphasizes the development of Introductory Level (Level I) skills in the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) as sanctioned by the Association for Music and Imagery (AMI). This course involves group participation to develop self awareness, acceptance and effective interpersonal skills. Personal development is an integral component of this course. Additionally, emphasis will be placed on music and relaxation and procedures with sensory, physical, emotional, cognitive and social disabilities.

 

Detailed Description of Course Content

The course will cover a variety of topics relevant to the advanced practice of music as therapy. These include but are not limited to the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM), five domains of human functioning and their application to major disability areas, and clinical applications of music and relaxation.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

An informal approach emphasizing lecture and discovery learning. Topical research on the part of the student will be employed and applied to students' clinical experience. The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) will be team taught by the primary professor and two guest clinicians. All faculty will be sanctioned trainers of the Bonny Method by the Association for Music and Imagery (AMI).

 

Goals and Objectives

  • To develop a working knowledge of the Guided Imagery and Music process and to complete the Introductory Level (Level I) of training
  • To investigate areas of human functioning and apply music therapy techniques to these areas
  • To meet the needs of the advanced music therapy clinician

 

Assessment Measures

Graded assignments will include exams, written papers, in class presentations and attendance and participation.
