Prerequisite: Graduate Standing in Nursing or Permission of Instructor

Credit Hours: (2) Two hours seminar

Detailed Description of Content of the Course

This course focuses on the distinct perspectives of advanced nursing practice roles and responsibilities.

Introduction to the theoretical and clinical foundations of advanced nursing practice, including the scope of practice, professional organizations requirements, advanced nursing practice competencies to manage healthcare for individuals and diverse populations across the lifespan.

1.     Advanced Practice Nurses’ roles and distinct responsibilities

2.     Professional identity, professionalism, and leadership

3.     Clinical judgment and diagnostic reasoning for advanced nursing practice

4.     Theoretical application of advanced nursing practice

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This course is taught online. The teaching strategies will be employed but are not limited to lectures, videos, PowerPoint presentations, discussion forums, assignments, self-reflection, and grand round sessions.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will have the knowledge and skills to:

1.     Analyze the historical development of advanced nursing practice and emerging roles in the current practice environment

2.     Articulate advanced practice nurses’ roles, the scope of practice, and professional responsibilities, including the privileges, limitations, and prescribing authority.

3.     Examine current practice guidelines and relevant resources to guide advanced practice clinical judgment and diagnostic reasoning.

4.     Demonstrate advanced nursing practice cultural competencies and effective communication skills, verbally and/or in writing
5.     Examine professional issues in advanced nursing practices.

Assessment Measures

Evaluation measures to assess achievement of course objectives may include but are not limited to faculty and student-led seminar discussions, lectures, guest speakers, case studies, reading assignments, written projects, quizzes, audio or video presentations, online resources, and other instructional technology strategies as appropriate.
