NUTR 316: Life Stage Nutrition I

Prerequisites: NUTR 214, CHEM 122 and admission to upper division NUTR

Credit Hours: (3)

Examination of nutrition needs for pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence, including normal nutrition as well as nutrition therapy for common conditions affecting these life stages. Physiological, psychological and cultural aspects characteristic of each of these phases of the lifespan will be related to nutritional requirements and eating behaviors.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

This course covers:

The influence of age, growth, normal development on specific nutritional needs of humans throughout different life stages including:

    o   Periconception

    o   Pregnancy

    o   Lactation

    o   Infancy

    o   Childhood

    o   Adolescence

·         The assessment and treatment of nutritional health risks for above life stages

·         The influence of socioeconomic, cultural, and psychological factors on nutrition behavior

·         Health promotion and disease prevention guidelines across the above life stages

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Course instruction strategies may include, but will not be limited to, lecture, discussion, class activities, problem based learning, case studies, videos, guest speakers, and student presentations.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

  • Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Describe the influence of age, growth, and normal development on nutritional requirements of people in the following life stages:  periconception, pregnancy, lacation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence.
  • Describe the assessment and treatment of nutritional health risks
  • Describe the influence of socioeconomic, cultural and psychological factors on nutrition behavior
  • Integrate health promotion and disease prevention theories and guidelines across the lifespan

 

Assessment Measures

Assessment measures may include, but will not be limited to exams, assignments, projects, case studies, oral presentations, and class participation.
