NUTR 401: Career Development in Nutrition and Dietetics

This course provides guidance to graduating seniors in the Nutrition and Dietetics major regarding advanced study, supervised practice, credentialing and employment options. 

 

Detailed Description of Course Content

  • Options for advanced study, supervised practice, credentialing and employment
  • Professional characteristics and dispositions
  • Identification and selection of internships and/or graduate programs
  • Dietetic Internship Centralized Application Service (DICAS)
  • Computer matching process
  • Personal statements, resumes, references, interviews
  • Graduate school applications
  • Graduate Record Examinations
  • Credentialing Exam for Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and Nutrition and Dietetic Technician, Registered (NDTR)
  • Professional portfolio/credential maintenance for RDN, NDTR
  • Finances: fees, tuition, scholarships, assistantships
  • Radford University Campus Resources (Center for Career and Talent Development)
  • Governance of nutrition and dietetics practice

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Course instruction strategies may include, but will not be limited to, lecture, discussion, class activities, videos, tutorials, guest speakers, visits to fairs (internship, graduate school, career, employment) and/or open houses.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

  • Successful completion of the course will enable the student to:
  • Initiate action to achieve a short term career goal upon graduation
  • Describe the RDN and NDTR credentialing requirements
  • Prepare a competitive application for the chosen path
  • Navigate the systems and procedures for application/matching
  • Demonstrate written and oral communications skills
  • Make informed decisions related to financial requirements

  • Explain governance of practice and public policy implications
