NUTR 426: Medical Nutrition Therapy II

NUTR 425 and 426, Medical Nutrition Therapy I and II present the evidence-based application of the Nutrition Care Process as conducted by the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist resulting in the prevention, delay or management of diseases and/or conditions.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

The role of nutrition therapy in health care and the foundational steps of the Nutrition Care Process using standardized terminology described in the Nutrition Terminology Reference Manual.

The knowledge base and critical thinking skills necessary to 1) conduct an individualized nutrition assessment, 2) determine the nutrition diagnosis, 3) develop appropriate interventions and 4) designate parameters to monitor/evaluate for diseases or disorders of various body systems and conditions. Systems include cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and accessory organs, endocrine, renal, hematological, respiratory, musculoskeletal and neurological; conditions involve energy imbalance, critical illness, metabolic stress, neoplastic disease, immunosuppressive disease and enteral and parental nutrition support.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Course instruction strategies may include, but will not be limited to, lecture, discussion, class activities, problem based learning, case studies, videos, guest speakers, and student presentations.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Apply the Nutrition Care Process to address a variety of clinical conditions.
  • Describe evidenced based guidelines forming the basis for Medical Nutrition Therapy interventions.
  • Document the steps of the Nutrition Care Process using standardized terminology

 

Assessment Measures

Assessment measures may include, but are not limited to exams, assignments, projects, case studies, and oral presentations.

This course, in part, fulfills the requirements for the Didactic Program in Dietetics accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics.
