PSYC 401: Psychology of the Exceptional Child

Prerequisites: PSYC 317

Credit Hours: (3)

Gives students an understanding of children who are different intellectually, behaviorally, socially and physically from the average child, as well as an understanding of the ecology of an exceptional child; provides student with some knowledge of special needs and techniques used in the assessment of and education of such individuals as well as information about capacities and abilities.

1. Understanding Human Differences
2. History of Human Services
3. Education and Exceptionality
4. Families and Exceptionality
5. Specific Exceptionalities: Giftedness; Disorders in Mental Functioning (learning Disabilities and Mental Retardation), Behavior, Communication, Hearing, Vision, Physical Abilities, and Health.
6. Multicultural Perspectives

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

A lecture format will be used, with some instructors choosing to have student presentation.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

1. Students will develop an understanding of exceptional children and their families.
2. To provide an elective course for education majors focusing on the psychological aspects of exceptionality.

 

Assessment Measures

Graded assignments may include in-class tests, a final examination, pop quizzes, the assignment of exercise and projects, and class presentations.
