PSYC 687: Pre-internship Seminar

Prerequisite: Concurrent registration with Psyc 781

Credit Hours: (1)

This course will cover standards of potential internship sites, portfolio development, requirements of NASP for the yearlong school psychology internship, and other relevant information necessary to complete a successful internship search and secure an acceptable internship to meet the third year requirement of the School of Psychology Program.

Note(s): It will be graded on a pass-fail basis.

This course will cover standards of potential internship sites, requirements of NASP for the year long school psychology internship, and other relevant information necessary to complete a successful internship search and secure an acceptable internship to meet the third year requirement of the School Psychology Program.   

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

I.     Requirements for all internship sites
II.    Review of required activities at an internship
III.   Resumes, Letter writing and Interviewing practices for the applicant
IV.   Standards of ethics and ethical behavior relevant to a school psychology intern
V.    Preparing for the final comprehensive oral exam
VI.   School Psychology issues for the new practitioner
VII.  Earning the NCSP credential and becoming a professional practitioner
VI.   Evaluating your own effectiveness as a practitioner
VII.  Developing a portfolio for evaluation as a student and for job searching

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

1. To increase the school psychology graduate student's awareness of job application issues and
     practices
2. To ensure that each second year school psychology student makes a successful job search and
    gains an internship position that is acceptable to the school psychology program
3.  To aid the school psychology student in becoming aware of the nature of the final
     comprehensive oral exam in school psychology.
4. To review program evaluation, outcome evaluation and self evaluation practices in order to
     maintain good scientifically based practices on the job
5. To ensure that graduating school psychology students will be knowledgeable and thoughtful
     about current issues in school psychology, including ethical practice, innovative practice, and
     credentials for practice.
6.  To aid the school psychology graduate student in gaining a professional identity and understanding what that entails.

 

Assessment Measures 

Students will be assessed using a variety of measures, which may include presentations, projects and papers.Performance will graded on a pass-fail basis.
