PSYC 774: Introduction to Psychopharmacological Medications

Prerequisite: Graduate standing

Credit Hours: (3)

Course provides students with rudimentary information regarding commonly prescribed psychopharmacological medications including basic classifications, indications, and contraindications. Issues of making appropriate referrals and the identification of effects and side effects will also be addressed.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

Topics to be addressed include the following:

1. Basic information regarding the substrates of drug action
2. Issues involved in making an appropriate psychiatric referral
3. The indications, contraindications and common effects and side effects of the following drug groups will be covered:

 

a. Antidepressants
b. Anitpsychotics
c. Anxiolytics and Hypnotics
d. Mood stabilizers
e. Stimulants
f. Drugs used for the management of substance abuse
g. Drugs used in psychiatric side effect management

 

Detailed Description of Course

A lecture format supplemented by textbook readings and group discussions, is utilized to promote student learning

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Students will develop a broad and basic knowledge base regarding the area of psychopharmacological medications. The primary goal is provide to adequate information such that students will make informed decisions regarding psychiatric referrals in their future positions in the field of mental health counseling

 

Assessment Measures

Graded assignments may include in class exams and a final examination as well as class preparation and participation.
