RCPT 200: Leisure in Contemporary Society (GE)

Examines the growth and development of leisure as an industry and the importance of
leisure experiences in the lives of individuals. Emphasis is on understanding the
physical, psychosocial, economic, political, and experiential aspects of leisure.
Note(s): General Education and Cultural or Behavioral Analysis designated course.
Detailed Description of Content of the Course
This course is designed to study the importance of balancing work and leisure in an individual's life. It will examine motivation and need for leisure, the criteria which determine leisure choices and the benefits and negative aspects of leisure behavior. The community, regional, national and global leisure trends and impact will be examined including the contribution of leisure to quality of life.
Students will have the opportunity to examine their own leisure behavior and discuss the impact of that behavior on their lives and the University community.
Detailed Description of Conduct of the Course
Students will be expected to read and engage with course materials and discuss their reactions with the class. Depending upon the instructor, students may be expected to engage and reflect on leisure activities and how they relate to physical, psychosocial, economic, political, and/or experiential aspects.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
The course will focus on these general goals which meet Core Cirriculum outcomes for:
Heath and Wellness:
1) Identify health-related choices that promote personal wellbeing and enhance the overall quality of life;
2) Analyze the relations among factors such as nutrition, stress, leisure, and health related fitness activities as they influence personal wellness;
3) Explain how personal health and lifestyle choices affect society at large and explain how social and cultural factors affect personal health and lifestyle choices.
Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to:
1) Identify skills and techniques that allow you to manage your time for more meaningful recreation and leisure;
2) Analyze social and cultural norms about how work, family, and leisure contribute to quality of life;
3) Reflect on personal attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors about the role of leisure in contemporary society and recognize the importance of leisure theories and concepts as a scientific pursuit.
