RCPT 340: Processes in Recreation Therapy

Prerequisites: RCPT major and completion of BIOL 322 or BIOL 310:311 with a grade of “C” or better, overall cumulative GPA of 2.5, or permission of the instructor

Provides a fundamental knowledge of the recreation therapy process and how it is influenced by diversity and social environment.  Provides a fundamental knowledge of assistive devices/equipment, activity modification techniques, group interaction, leadership, and safety.

 

Detailed Description of Content of the Course

The topics considered in this course represent the foundation of recreation therapy. These topics focus on developing initial knowledge, understanding, skills, and competencies necessary for successful practice in recreation therapy and in meeting eligibility requirements to take the national certification examination in therapeutic recreation.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of the Course

The primary means of imparting knowledge and information is by lecture, although films and experiential learning are used. These activities are frequently followed by discussion. An emphasis within the classroom is to create an environment wherein students are provided the opportunity to ask questions and discuss reading assignments, visual presentations, and outside experiences.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

  1. Describe the nature and etiology of illness and disability and their effects on functioning
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the recreation therapy process and therapeutic recreation service models in healthcare and health promotion
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the need for and the practice of ethical and professional behaviors
  4. Demonstrate understanding of the psychological, sociological, physiological, and historical significance and contributions of recreation therapy services
  5. Understanding of the impact of social attitudes toward illness and disability and of the attitudes and self-concepts held by individuals with illnesses and/or disabilities during leisure experiences
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of the professional roles of the practitioner as therapist, facilitator, advocate, leisure counselor/educator, recreation specialist

 

Assessment Measures

Student progress will be assessed through quizzes, exams, presentations, papers, and labs.
