RCPT 342: Assessment in Recreation Therapy

Prerequisites: RCPT major and completion of BIOL 322 or BIOL 310:311 with a grade of “C” or better, overall cumulative GPA of 2.5, or permission of instructor

Credit Hours: (3) Two hours lecture: two hours laboratory

Provides a thorough understanding of the assessment process utilized within recreation therapy practice. Also provides a general understanding of current therapeutic recreation/leisure assessment instruments, inventories and questionnaires, and other sources of commonly used multidisciplinary assessment tools including standardized measures, selection of instrumentation, general procedures for implementation, and the interpretation of findings.

 

Detailed Description of Content of the Course

This course will introduce students to the utilization of activities for rehabilitative and habilitative purposes. A lifespan model will be used throughout the course. The study will include normal physical and psychosocial function as well as selected dysfunctions relative to each stage of life. The recreation therapist’s role, assessment, and activity skills utilized in clinical and non-clinical settings are taught. Learning takes place in both the classroom and the laboratory settings and may include field experiences.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of the Course

Through lecture, discussion, and experiential learning opportunities the student will demonstrate initial skills of relating to people individually or in groups; self assess her/his own assets and strengths in the area of communication; categorize and list age-specific types of physical and psychological conditions, systems, etiology, symptoms, prognosis and intervention; and outline major normal life tasks/roles of children, adolescents, adults, and elderly and relate barriers to treatment and remediation of dysfunction in meeting therapeutic goals. The student will also analyze leisure/recreational activities for their therapeutic potential; critically analyze literature to determine the efficacy of selected therapeutic interventions; demonstrate an ability to adapt therapeutic activities to meet the needs of various populations (ages, cultures, abilities); and integrate previous learning and experiences to develop an identity of self as a professional in therapeutic recreation.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

  1. Demonstrate an ability to use basic medical and psychiatric terminology
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the significance of multiculturalism in therapeutic recreation
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the roles and contributions of the client, family and significant others in the therapeutic recreation process
  4. Knowledge of various evaluative tools and methods and the ability to collect and utilize evaluative information to document client outcomes and program outcomes
  5. Understanding of the purpose and content of and the ability to use documentation, as it relates to clients, staff, programs, management, and quality assurance and improvement in therapeutic recreation 

 

Assessment Measures

Student progress will be assessed through projects (e.g., activity facilitation, individualized treatment plan, and assessment review) and exams.
