SOWK 210: Interventive Methods I

Pre- or Corequisites: SOWK 200

Introduces the theories, concepts and basic skills involved in helping persons in the delivery of human services. Emphasizes interviewing and problem-solving skills.

 

Detailed description of Content of Course

I. Teach concepts of General Systems Theory and concepts and steps for generalist social work assessments and service planning models. Provide various helping roles exercised by a generalist social worker. Introduce concept of cultural competence in the context of social work.
II. Experiential practice in genograms, interviewing skills, role-plays, problem assessment, goal identification and strategy development and contract development.
III. Provides opportunity to apply critical thinking skills to problem solving with individuals, families, groups and communities.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

I. Students actively participate in role-plays and interviews to practice critical thinking skills, in the moment. Students practice adaptability in understanding the dynamics of human behavior and diversity. Students develop skills in assessing, planning techniques and strategies with individuals, families, grips and communities.
II. Format-combination of the following:

  • Lecture and discussion led by instructor
  • Presentation of student's geneogram
  • Presentation of student's audio tape interview
  • Role-plays of interview situations with other students
  • Completion of model application paper

 

Goals and objectives of the course

Students participate in a variety of experiential exercises:

  • To teach the concepts of General Systems Theory
  • To teach theories and techniques that relate to basic interviewing approaches as a professional helper
  • To teach the concepts and steps of a generalist assessment and service planning model
  • To teach concepts and principles that relate to the generalist practice of social work
  • To provide information on the various worker roles exercised by a generalist social worker.
  • To teach the concepts/techniques related to writing process and summary recordings.
  • To provide the opportunity for students to develop observational and critical thinking skills in relation to (1) the knowledge base of social work, and (2) intervention with client/consumer/customer systems
  • To introduce concepts and models related to generalist social work practice with diverse client/consumer systems.
  • To introduce the concept of cultural competence in the context of social work practice.

 

Assessment Measures

Student progress in achieving course goals and objectives may be measured in a variety of ways, including writing assignments, participation in a variety of experiential exercises and assignments and oral presentations.
