SOCY 25O. Social Inequality. (GE)
Three hours lecture (3).

Prerequisites: SOCY 110 or SOCY 121

This course examines the dimensions, theories and distribution of inequality in the United States and worldwide. Particular attention is paid to the effects of inequality on the life chances of rich and poor, men and women, and dominant and subordinate groups alike.

Note(s): General Education and Cultural or Behavioral Analysis designated course.  This course may be used to meet requirements for the minor in Women’s and Gender Studies.

 

Detailed Description of Content of the Course

The purpose of this course is to aid students in understanding inequality and its impact on the life chances and life styles of various groups especially ethnic minorities, children and women. The major areas considered are:

 

1.The distribution of income and wealth, educational opportunities and health care and the occupational structure.
2.Theories of inequality.
3.Cultural and social structural forces determining the distribution of opportunity including technological change, economic change and power.
4.The effect of the unequal distribution of resources on women, ethnic, minorities and children.
5.Government policies which alleviate or exacerbate inequality.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The course includes lectures, films, and class discussion of readings and related current events.

 

Goals and Objectives of Course

Students will have an expanded understanding of the sociological imagination; i.e., the effect of social structure and culture on individual behavior.

 

Assessment Measures

Graded assignments include tests, papers, oral presentations, and class participation.
