STAT 421: Design of Experiments

Prerequisite: STAT 302

Credit Hours: (3)

Theory of analysis of variance and covariance; fixed and random effects models; completely randomized design; randomized block design, Latin square design, factorials; split-plot design and response surface design.

Note(s): Applied Learning designated course.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

  • The logic and rationale for taking observations and making inferences as a result of these observations will be studied.
  • A variety of experimental designs will be discussed and analyzed, including the completely randomized design, the randomized complete block design, the Latin square design and the split-plot design.
  • The topics of variability and factorial experiments will also be examined.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The lecture method will be used to transfer knowledge. A statistical software package will also be used extensively by students for the analysis of problem data. The output of such software will be studied in class to provide correct interpretations.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

The main objectives of the course are:

  • to provide students with the understanding of the impact of variability on the design of experiments.
  • to expose students to various specific experimental designs
  • to provide students with a basic understanding of data analysis from an analysis of variance approach.

 

Assessment Measures

Assessment of the student's success in the course will be based on tests, homework problems, and computer analyses, the number and course percentages of which are left to the instructor's discretion.
