THEA 410: Voice and Speech

Prerequisites: THEA 297

The work begun in Voice and Movement is extended through continuing physical awareness with an emphasis on vocal range along with parallel work on articulation and other speech elements.

Note(s): Student cannot receive credit for both THEA 326 and THEA 410.

Linklater: resonance, range, articulation; IPA work, text work, accent reduction.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Class time is primarily spent on kinesthetic work to deepen students' awareness of their voice with attention to spoken sound. Some time is devoted to analyzing effective speaking through recordings as well as regular preparing/performing of text. IPA is employed in pronunciation, accent reduction and dialect work.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

1. To further students' awareness of their vocal instrument and its capacity.
2. To explore and refine the elements of articulating spoken sound.
3. For students to explore their vocal range.
4. To begin accent reduction/dialect study.
5. To examine elements of sound and speech: projection, volume, rate, rhythm, quality, and resonance.

 

Assessment Measures

Kinesthetic work is supervised by a teacher trained in the Linklater approach. Students are evaluated on vocal work in regular in-class performances and a journal of their experience and progress.
