Target Audience
This course is intended for the individual looking to explore emergency services as
an entry-level Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
Course description
The Emergency Medical Technician – Basic course is designed to provide training to
prepare an individual to function independently in a medical emergency. This course
provides the basic knowledge and skills needed to provide basic life support (BLS)
care and is required to progress to more advanced levels of prehospital patient care.
The course requires a total of 166 hours of training. Virginia Certification requires
successful completion of a written and practical skills examination. This course
is designed to train individuals to serve as a vital link in the chain of the health
care team. This includes all skills necessary to provide emergency medical care as
an attendant-in-charge with a basic life support ambulance service or other specialized
rescue service.
Upon successfully completion of the training program, the student will be capable
of performing the following functions:

Attendance policy
Students must be present for a minimum of eighty five percent (85% of the didactic
and practical aspects of the course). However, failure to be present and successfully
fulfill all skill and knowledge evaluations may still prohibit a student from course
completion. A student can only miss a maximum of 24 hours to remain eligible to test for their EMT certification.
Continuing education credit
This course is eligible for continuing education credit for certified providers through
the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services.
Course fee
$850.00 – includes: instruction, CPR certification and initial testing fees. Textbook,
background check and drug screening are extra.
Note: Testing positive for marijuana or any other illegal drug will disqualify you from taking the course.
