Advising appointments prior to registration are required for all Sociology majors,
and it is at this appointment that you are given the PIN needed to register.
Registration Advising occurs usually through Weeks 7-11 of the Fall/Spring semester,
with the first wave of registration beginning usually about Week 11. All Sociology
majors should receive an email around Week 6 announcing that it is time to sign up
for an advising appointment. Email Roby Page, Ph.D. to arrange an advising appointment either in-person or on Zoom.
Prior to your advising appointment, review your degree audit online as well as the schedule for upcoming classes (see links at the bottom of this page) so you are prepared with a schedule plan when you arrive.
Sociology Practice Experience
All Sociology majors must include a (minimum) 3 credit hour practice experience as
one of their elective courses counted toward the requirement for the major. This
requirement is met by taking either SOCY 499 Internship or SOCY 493 Practicum in Sociology.
Choosing your Sociology Electives
Various electives are offered either each semester, once a year, every other year,
or otherwise. It is a good idea to consult with your advisor on when a desired elective
will be offered so you will not miss an elective that may be offered infrequently.
Class Withdrawal
The deadline for a course withdrawal usually comes about the end of Week 8 of the
semester. For the precise deadline stay tuned for announcements or, better yet, check
with the Office of the Registrar.
To withdrawal from a course you must secure a withdrawal form and have it signed by
your academic advisor and the signed form must be submitted to the Registrar's Office

Applying for Graduation
For Spring or Summer graduation, applications are due early in the Fall term. For
Fall graduation, applications are due early in the Spring term. Watch for a precise
deadline as the time approaches. Applications are completed and submitted online
through OneCampus; search for "Apply for Graduation."
If you plan to complete your coursework in the semester following your graduation ceremony, you must submit with your online application the Declaration of Intent to Participate form.

Alpha Kappa Delta: The International Sociology Honor Society
Radford University is a member of Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society. Eligible undergraduate students must
be sociology majors with junior standing, possess at least a 3.0 GPA in their sociological

Sociology Club
The Sociology Club presents great opportunities for students to get together outside of the classroom
setting.
Sociologists are in the people business. Any occupation that requires understanding people, studying human behavior, assessing people's opinions, beliefs, or needs, etc., can use social scientists. Sociologists are well-qualified for modern government work and increasingly recognized as valuable in the fields of management, international business, and the health and social services fields. Sociology provides the tools for understanding the multicultural, international, global issues that are basic to our continued existence.
Graduates in Sociology can offer employers the skills that are listed by liberal arts alumni across the USA as most critical to their jobs: oral communication, written communication, interpersonal skills, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Surveys indicate that employers look for the skills that undergraduate training in Sociology provides. The subject matter of this field is intrinsically fascinating; as such, it offers valuable preparation for careers in journalism, politics, public relations, or public administration, fields that involve investigative skills and working with diverse groups. Many students use Sociology as the liberal arts foundation for professions such as law, education, medicine, social work, and counseling.
