Libraries Services

Printing and scanning are available on both the main and RUC campuses for students and employees. Members of the public may scan items and save or email the images to themselves for printing elsewhere.

How do I log on to a computer? If you are a Radford University or RUC patron (student or employee), log on with your university username and password. If you are a public patron, use the login information available at one of our service desks.

How do I print?  Your print job will automatically go to the printer nearest your computer.

How long is my document? Go to the File menu and select Print Preview.

How much does printing cost? Printing costs are standardized and listed online. Library printers default to duplex printing.

Are there any scanners? Yes! Several scanners are located in McConnell Library in the Library Commons on Level 3. For Radford University/RUC patrons, scans may be saved to your H drive or USB drive, e-mailed, or printed.

Are there additional printing options for Radford University/RUC patrons? Yes! Radford University Printing Services offers photos, wide format prints, bound reports/booklets, business cards, resumes, and posters/flyers, on a variety of paper stocks.

Are you interested in having university owned books, journals or DVDs mailed to your home?

You are eligible for this free service if:

• You are enrolled in, or teach, an Extended Campus course, AND
• You do not come to the Radford OR Roanoke campus each week, AND
• Your mailing address is not in Radford, Fairlawn, or Roanoke.

To request that we mail your requested items to you, simply select the “Mail - distance ed only” option when placing a hold through our online catalog.

Our free Interlibrary Loan service allows you to borrow books, articles, and other materials that are not already owned by any of the University Libraries.

To access Interlibrary Loan, Log in or set up your account.

The first time you log on, you will be taken to a Personal Information form. After you have completed the form, you may begin requesting materials by submitting request forms, located under “New Request” within Interlibrary Loan. You may request items that are not owned by a University library, or that are owned by one but are currently checked out.

We will submit your request to other libraries within one working day. The item’s arrival date depends on how quickly a lending library is able to fill your request, plus transit time. Once your item has arrived, you will be notified by email. An item’s loan period is determined by the lending library.

You may request a renewal from your “Checked Out Items” page in Interlibrary Loan, unless the item is marked “No Renewals” on the front cover. If you would like for someone other than yourself to pick up your ILL materials, you must list that person on your personal information page under “Authorized Users.”

Interlibrary Loan services may be used by current Radford University students, faculty, and staff.

How do I check out materials?

• Current student or employee: Simply present your current ONE Card at McConnell Library's Front Desk or at the RUC Library's service desk. There is no separate library card—just use your ONE Card.
• Retired employee: You may continue checking out materials using your ONE Card. Your card will be renewed upon your request, for one year at a time.
• Dependent family member of a current employee: Use your family ID card, obtainable from the ONE Card office, and present it at checkout.
• Virginia resident who is not affiliated with Radford University: Present a current Virginia driver’s license, or a military ID or passport along with verification of your Virginia address. (Address verification may be presented in the form of a bill, a check with a pre-printed address, or a similar document.) If you are under age 18, we require the signature and identification (presented in person) of a parent or guardian. Public patrons will be issued a 
• New River Public Library Cooperative library card, which may also be registered at public libraries throughout the New River Valley.
• VIVA (Virtual Library of Virginia) student or employee: Present your own university's ID card as sufficient identification. We will issue you a New River Public Library Cooperative library card, which may also be registered at public libraries throughout the New River Valley. Can I renew materials?

Yes! Most library materials can be renewed. Be sure to renew your library materials on or before their due date in order to avoid overdue fines. Renewal requests can be made through your library account or by contacting the Front Desk at frontdesk@radford.edu or 540-831-5364. Renewal requests for RUC Library materials can be made by contacting Rhiannon Cooke at recooke@radford.edu or 540-831-1875

Can someone check out materials on my behalf?

If you are a Radford University or RUC employee, and you would like to designate a specific person – such as a student worker -- to check out materials on your behalf at either University Libraries location, simply email frontdesk@radford.edu from your Radford University/RUC email account, and give us the following information:

• A statement saying that proxy checkout permission is granted

• Full name of proxy, and Radford University ID number of proxy (if applicable)

• Length of permission (just today, all semester, or permanent)

After we receive this authorization, we will enter information into your library account that will allow your proxy to check out all University Libraries materials on your behalf, at either University Libraries location. You will be held responsible for damage or loss of all items that are checked out to you, regardless of whether the checkout was made by your proxy. 

We will require your proxy to present their own valid identification card in order to check out materials on your behalf.

Please note that Interlibrary Loan proxy checkout permissions are handled separately through the "Authorized Users" section of ILLiad. Giving someone proxy permission to check out University Libraries materials will not allow them to check out your ILL materials.

We offer a variety of materials and formats at the University Libraries. Physical items circulate for specific time periods as listed below. Renewals are available for most materials, unless other patrons are waiting.

Most items are fine-free! However, overdue fines will be charged for course reserves and audiovisual equipment. Replacement costs will be assessed for all items once they become extremely overdue, and can be cleared with either payment in full, or by return of the items. Charges may be assessed to any patron if items are damaged beyond normal wear and tear.

• Main collection books, DVDs, and back issues of journals and magazines may be borrowed for 28 days by undergraduates, public patrons, and family members; until the end of the current term* by graduate students and GTFs; and for 6 months* by faculty and staff. There are no late fines. *Loan periods are subject to being reduced to 28 days if items are needed by other library patrons. 
• Popular Reading books may be borrowed for 28 days by all patrons. 
• Audiovisual equipment may be borrowed by current Radford University and RUC students and employees only. Equipment circulates for 7 days and overdue fines for students are $5 per day.
• Course Reserves circulate on either an hourly or daily basis, depending on the particular item. Late fines for students are 25 cents per hour for hourly checkouts; and $1 per day for daily checkouts.

We send notification of overdue materials, fines, and bills to you by email. Please let us know if you have any changes to your email address, mailing address, or phone number.

You may view charges from your library account or by contacting the Front Desk at 540-831-5364 or frontdesk@radford.edu, or the RUC Library service desk at 540-831-2272.  Payments may be made at the McConnell Library Front Desk by ONE Card, or we can arrange for you to pay by credit card. Payments may be made at the RUC Library service desk by cash, check, or ONE Card.  Unpaid charges of $5 or more may result in transcript or diploma blocks for current and former students, as well as suspension of borrowing privileges. Patrons with unpaid charges are submitted to the Virginia Debt Setoff program, and amounts due will be withheld from state tax refunds or other state sources of income.

Please be aware that Teaching Resources Center loan periods and overdue fine policies differ from University Libraries loan periods and overdue fine policies.

McConnell Library has an Accessible Technology Room on Level 3 that is available for use by the campus community. Students who are registered with the Center for Accessibility Services have priority use. 

The AT Room offers a large-screen PC located on a motorized adjustable table.  The room also offers noise-canceling headphones, a fan, full-spectrum lighting, and a video phone.

The room does not have to be reserved in advance, but bookings are accepted. Please contact the library’s Front Desk at (540) 831-5364 or frontdesk@radford.edu.

Our Course Reserves service at McConnell Library provides access to supplementary course materials for specific classes.

Reserve materials are kept at McConnell Library’s Front Desk, and are available anytime the library is open.  You can check the availability of specific items by using the Reserves search tab on the library’s home page.

To use reserve materials, go to the Front Desk with your campus ONE Card and ask for the material by your professor’s name and/or course name or number. 

Reserve materials are kept at the RUC Library front desk and can be used in the library for a period of 2 hours. Faculty members who would like to put materials on reserve at the RUC Library should email Crystal Dent at cdent1@radford.edu.

The McConnell Library Course Reserve Service supports the academic mission of Radford University and acts as an extension of the classroom by providing access to supplementary course materials for specific classes.

The service is provided upon instructor initiation, within the bounds of the Fair Use guidelines of the Copyright Act as described in Title 17, United States Code. This service is for the use of all faculty, students, and staff of Radford University.

The service is not designed to replace textbooks or course packs. Materials are placed on Course Reserve only during the time period they are required by a particular course. The Reserves Supervisor determines whether instructor requests fall within the Course Reserve policy. We are not able to process requests that fall outside the scope of the service.

What Can Be Placed on Course Reserve?

Items that can be placed on Course Reserve include: books; media;* instructor-owned copies of materials;** sound recordings. There is a limit of 30 reserve items per course.

*Media: original editions of sound recordings, videotapes, DVDs, microforms, and any other library-owned or instructor-owned media may be placed on Course Reserve.

**Instructor-Owned Materials: a personal copy of an item will be accepted when a library-owned copy is unavailable. However, every attempt will be made to acquire a library copy. Instructors may be required to show proof of copyright compliance. Instructors may lend their personally-owned, legally obtained books, articles, or other materials to the Library for the use of library patrons. If an item is lent to the library, it will be affixed with identification and circulation labels and security strips. The library will not be liable for damage or loss of such materials.

Items that cannot be placed on Course Reserve include: archival materials; consumable workbooks, exercise sheets, standardized test booklets, etc. that are intended primarily for use in the classroom or by individual students; digitized works; materials belonging to other libraries; materials printed from the internet.

Fair Use and Copyright

McConnell Library makes a good faith effort to adhere to the U.S. Copyright Law and Fair Use Guidelines. The following sources are among those reviewed in the creation of this policy.

• United States Code, Title 17, Copyright Law. Sections 107 and 108 are applicable for library use. The Fair Use Guidelines, from Section 107, allows limited use of copyrighted works without permission; it suggests examination of these four factors: purpose and character of use; nature of the copyrighted work; amount and substantiality of work; and effect on the market for the original work.
• Association of Research Libraries Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Academic and Research Libraries
• ALA’s Model Policy Concerning College and University Photocopying for Classroom, Research and Library Reserve Use

The Library can place items such as the following on Course Reserve without needing to obtain permission from a rights holder:

• Exams, exam keys, and homework solutions
• Lecture notes
• Student papers (however, instructors must submit written permission from the student authors)
• U.S. Government publications
• Material within the public domain
• Material for which the instructor is the copyright holder

If an instructor’s request falls outside of Fair Use, the Reserves Supervisor will attempt to acquire permission from the rights holder. Items in the public domain do not have a copyright holder and therefore do not require permission. However, there may be cases where the proscribed use is prohibited (streaming audio, for example). When it is determined that a Course Reserve request cannot be processed, the Reserves Supervisor will contact the person submitting the request.
