We all need strength and resilience to overcome and grow from the tough events life brings us. I’ve learned that from personal experience. On October 15, 1994, I lay near death on a Brooklyn street after being hit by a car. I spent the next three months in hospital and the next two years on crutches. Twenty-four years later, on the same date in 2018, I again lay near death, brought down by leukemia. The love of family and friends helped me recover from both events. I changed profoundly, in many ways for the better, and found new paths for my life.
