PSYC 442: Techniques of psychological Interviewing

Prerequisites: Psyc 121, junior or senior standing

Students will learn theories and skills related to counseling and psychological interviewing, with an emphasis on developing students' skills in listening, observing, and responding appropriately in interpersonal situations.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

A combination of lecture, informal discussion, in-class activities, and out-of-class assignments may be used in this course. These components will focus upon the text or other assigned readings, audio-visual presentations, or other relevant materials drawn from the popular cultural media and current events.


Goals and Objectives of the Course

Having successfully completed this course, the student will be able to:

    1) Demonstrate a working knowledge of interview microskills and an awareness of their personal style and orientation to helping others.

    2) Conduct a full interview using effective interview microskills while integrating developmental and multicultural issues.

    3) Demonstrate self-awareness by articulating their thoughts and feelings and commenting on their behaviors during the interview process, and how these factors might affect the process of interviewing others.


Assessment Measures

Student performance will be assessed based on some combination of the following: In-class examinations, which consist of objective or essay questions; in-class or out-of-class quizzes; term papers or projects; class attendance; class participation; in-class presentations.
