Three hours lecture

Prerequisites: PSYC 641 or permission of instructor

Study of alcohol and drug abuse; focuses on characteristics of drugs and alcohol, psycho-physical reactions, and treatment approaches.

3. Treatment Methods
4. Issues Related to Substance Abuse Counseling

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The format of the course is lecture and discussion. Speakers and site visits will also be used.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

It is intended that the individual will:

1. become familiar with some of the main issues, questions and terminology found in the field of substance abuse;
2. develop some basic biological understandings related to drug action;
3. gain some theoretical understandings which will provide him or her different ideas/perspectives with which to construe substance abuse;
4. become aware of the variety of treatment approaches used in the field;
5. gain insight into his/her own relation to substance abuse.

 

Assessment Measures

Graded assignments may include in-class tests, a final examination, pop quizzes, the assignment and presentation of exercises, and projects, and class preparation and participation.
