NURS 454 - Clinical Nursing Practicum
Prerequisites: NURS 443, NURS 444, NURS 448
Corequisites: NURS 451 and NURS 453
Credits: (4) Four credit hours: 12 hours practicum per week
Provides students with the opportunity to synthesize theoretical concepts, current research, and nursing practice skills in a specific clinical setting. Professional roles are applied through structured clinical learning experiences and learning is facilitated through a selected clinical role model serving as preceptor to the student.
Detailed Description of Content of the Course
The objectives and content of this Level 4 Course are derived from the School of Nursing’s philosophy and conceptual framework and the Essentials for Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice and facilitate achievement of the School’s program objectives. Additionally, the major topics and skills covered in this course are common to major leadership and professional development nursing textbooks, and represent areas covered on standardized achievement examinations and the NCLEX-RN Test Plan. Current research and advancement in theory and clinical practice also determine content.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The following teaching strategies will be employed, but are not limited to:
• Experiential clinical practice, guided logs, appraisal of critical incidents, seminar presentation, portfolio development, multimedia, and computer-assisted learning exercises.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Apply scientific principles of nursing knowledge in partnership with the client to promote, protect, and restore the client’s holistic health.
2. Implement the Standards of Nursing Practice.
3. Apply safeguards and decision-making tools embedded in patient care technologies and information systems to support a safe practice environment for both patients and health care workers and to ensure the patients rights. Recognize and intervene in the abuse and exploitation of children, elderly, and disabled patients encountered in the health care setting.
4. Utilize critical thinking, clinical judgment, and clinical reasoning, research findings, and the Standards of Nursing Practice through involvement with health care issues.
5. Demonstrate caring by participating in evidence-based research in collaboration with other members of the health care team to improve patient outcomes.
6. Access inter-professional and intra-professional resources to resolve ethical and other practice dilemmas.
7. Exhibit accountability for care delivery in a variety of settings.
8. Utilize effective written, oral and non-verbal inter- and intra professional communication and collaborative skills to deliver evidence-based, patient-centered, culturally competent nursing care in collaboration with other members of the health care team.
9. Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning to support excellence in nursing practice and foster professional growth and development.
10. Exhibit leadership qualities commensurate with entry-level professional nursing practice.
11. Advocate for consumers and for the nursing profession on a regional, state, national and global level to influence health care policy and promote the advancement of nursing practice.
12. Recognize and intervene in cases of domestic violence
13. Demonstrate understanding of the impact of bioterrorism.

The course grade is determined by an evaluation of the extent to which the student meets the stated course objectives. Students must have a minimum of 75% (“C”) on each graded component in order to pass the course. Clinical performance must be satisfactory to pass the course.

Additional costs may be incurred by students related to travel, meals and housing depending on clinical placement.
