RU hosts Virginia Natural History Society Conference
Radford University hosted the 3rd meeting of the Virginia Natural History Society on Saturday, September 23rd. We hosted over 50 attendees from 14 schools, agencies, and non-profit organizations around the Commonwealth. The full-day conference included student and professional talks, a poster session, and a planetarium show.

About the Virginia Natural History Society:
“The Virginia Natural History Society (VNHS) was formed in 1992 to bring together persons interested in the natural history of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The VNHS defines natural history in a broad sense, from the study of plants, animals, and other organisms to the geology and ecology of the state, to the natural history of the native people who inhabit it. The goals of the VNHS are to promote research on the natural history of Virginia, educate the citizens of the Commonwealth on natural history topics, and to encourage the conservation of natural resources.”

The VNHS publishes the scientific journal, Banisteria, and has supported publications from students and faculty from the RU Biology Department. Biology professor, Karen Powers, is the current president of the society.

We are thankful to RU Catering for providing excellent food and service, to conference services for assisting with parking and signage. We are most grateful for on-campus sponsors of the coffee breaks during the day: the Dean’s Office in the Artis College of Science and Technology, and the RU Office of Research and Creative Scholarship. The Office of Undergraduate Research & Scholarship provided equipment for the poster session, and printed out student research posters. Dr. Rhett Herman facilitated the offering of the planetarium show, and Paki Stephenson kept the RU Museum of Earth Science open later in the day for conference attendees to visit. Thanks to ALL for a successful event!!
