Radford University students have access to a variety of employment opportunities. While enrolled in classes, student employees should work a limited number of hours per week but may be allowed to work more hours during breaks. In addition to employment, students may also be eligible for other forms of payment. For more information on payments outside of payroll, please refer to the Payments to Students Guidelines.
Student hourly wage employees receive payment for work or services performed on an ongoing basis. Students are paid biweekly at an hourly rate for actual hours worked, with payments processed through payroll. To be paid, student hourly wage employees must complete a web time entry timesheet each pay period. If web time entry deadlines are missed, paper timesheets can be manually submitted. These employees are eligible for overtime. For instructions on time entry, please refer to the Time Submission Presentation located on the Training Catalog - Controller's Office page in D2L for instructions on time entry.
Federal Work Study: Payment for work or services performed by students awarded through the Federal Work Study (FWS) program, administered by the Financial Aid Office and funded 75% by federal funds. Students are paid biweekly on an hourly basis through the payroll system. Work-study employees must complete a web time entry timesheet each pay period to be paid; paper timesheets can be submitted manually if web time entry deadlines are missed. These employees are not eligible for overtime pay. Federal Work Study positions are awarded by the Financial Aid Office.
Work-study employees are paid at the University’s student wage rate of $15.00 per hour, and their hours are limited based on their FWS award. The program encourages community service and work related to the student’s field of study. The pay earned is not applied toward tuition.
Work Scholarship: Payment for work or services performed by students awarded as part of the Work Scholarship program, administered by the Financial Aid Office. Employees are paid biweekly on an hourly basis through the payroll system and must complete a web time entry timesheet for hours worked. If the web time entry deadlines are missed, paper timesheets can be submitted manually.
Work-study and work scholarship student employees are not permitted to work when the University is closed and/or when classes are not in session.
Academic Graduate Assistantship – Stipend: A position held by a graduate student that provides payment for work or services performed. Graduate assistantships may be classified as Graduate Assistants (GAs), Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs), Graduate Teaching Fellows (GTFs), or Graduate Research Fellows, and are administered through the College of Graduate Studies and Research. Graduate Assistants receive biweekly payments in equal installments through the payroll system and do not need to submit timesheets.
Non-Academic Graduate Assistantship: A graduate assistantship held by a graduate student outside of the Graduate College that involves payment for work or services performed. These assistantships are paid biweekly through the payroll system, and the employees are required to submit timesheets.
